KEEP IN MIND
  • A simulation does not predict local viewing conditions
  • Extra catalogues and plugins need separate setup

A desktop sky simulation

Stellarium is a free, open-source planetarium for computers. Its official feature list includes stars, deep-sky objects, constellation illustrations and a simulated atmosphere. Windows, macOS and Linux downloads are linked from the project website. This article covers the desktop project; similarly named mobile products and the web version have their own requirements and features.

02

Give your first session a question

Instead of trying every control, choose one object you want to recognize and a place and time relevant to you. Use the desktop guide to set those inputs, locate the object and compare its position with familiar reference points. Our suggested exercise is to note what changes when you move the simulated time forward, then return to the original time to confirm the difference.

03

Separate the model from the view outside

A rendered sky is a learning aid. It does not establish cloud cover, visibility from your actual observing spot or the quality of a telescope view. Treat an attractive view as a simulation, then consult local observing conditions separately. Do not use a simulated solar view as instructions for looking at the Sun through optical equipment.

04

Read the guide before adding more

Stellarium supports additional catalogues and plugins, including telescope-related features. Start with the basic controls and add a feature only when it answers a specific question. Check the current system requirements and the documentation for your chosen version. We have not tested telescope control, calculated prediction accuracy or evaluated the product on a physical device.
