A modernized RTS project
OpenRA recreates and modernizes classic real-time strategy games. The maintained games include Red Alert, Tiberian Dawn and Dune 2000. Its documentation describes modern controls, production queues, fog of war, replays and online multiplayer. It is a separate open-source project: EA does not endorse or support it. Do not treat it as an official remaster or assume its balance matches an original release.
Learn one set of decisions first
Our suggested starting plan is to pick one of the maintained games, learn the control scheme and understand its production and resource decisions before moving to competitive multiplayer. Trying several games at once can make it harder to tell whether a problem comes from an unfamiliar rule or an unfamiliar command. Revisit a replay to look at one decision rather than expecting every match to be useful at once.
Installation includes an asset step
OpenRA is free and bundles the maintained mods. The project says the initial game-asset setup can download assets or use original game disks. Complete the documented setup before assuming an installation is ready for disconnected play. Internet is needed for online matches; check the documentation for the mode you intend to use.
Choose stable releases deliberately
The download page separates releases and playtests and offers Windows, macOS and Linux options. For a first look, understand that distinction before choosing a build. Read platform requirements and any packaging limitations. We have not tested multiplayer matchmaking, performance or game balance; this review explains the documented structure and a reasonable way to approach it.
