The correct update route depends on where Firefox was installed, not just which version number you saw online.
Identify the installation route
Mozilla’s update instructions distinguish its direct download from store or distribution packages. A Microsoft Store installation updates through that store. A Linux distribution package uses the system’s software-update tools and may not show Firefox’s own update options. Establish which installation you have before following instructions intended for a different package. A missing button is not automatically a broken browser.
Use the browser’s own update check
For a Mozilla installation, open Help and About Firefox from the menu; on macOS, use the Firefox menu and About Firefox. The window checks for updates and downloads an available update. Complete the prompted restart after saving your work. Mozilla notes that a download may still be happening in the background even when the window says the browser is up to date.
Check the work you depend on
Our suggested follow-up is to reopen one essential site, confirm a needed extension still behaves as expected and note the installed version if you need support. Consult the release notes for that version rather than a generic article promising the latest build. Do not install an update from a random warning inside a web page. This guide intentionally avoids freezing a version number that will soon become outdated.
Go straight to the people who make it.
