01

What it does

Organic Maps offers offline navigation on Android and iPhone. Its official site describes walking, cycling and driving directions based on OpenStreetMap. Download the relevant maps before you leave your connection behind.

02

Why it is worth a look

The strongest use case is preparation. Choose a region before you travel, check the places you need, and try a familiar route. Our assessment is that offline access is most valuable when you have checked coverage ahead of time.

03

Before you install

Downloaded maps are not a guarantee that every path, business, or restriction is current. Use local signs and judgment. This review does not verify route accuracy or battery life on a device.

04

Prepare a journey in stages

Before a trip, identify the arrival point, accommodation and a useful meeting place. Download the relevant map area while connected and check that each place is visible. Then inspect the route between two of them in the travel mode you expect to use. A driving route does not answer the same question as a walking route.

Try viewing the downloaded area with mobile data and Wi-Fi temporarily off while you are still somewhere familiar. Restore your connection afterward. This is a practical check that the required map is on your phone, not a test of every road or a guarantee of positioning accuracy.

05

Keep one independent reference

Save the destination’s written address outside the map app and agree on a meeting point if travelling with others. Offline maps help when reception is poor, but a flat battery or an incorrect destination still needs another solution. For unfamiliar paths, compare the map with current local restrictions and conditions. Our preference is to make these checks before departure rather than discover missing coverage at an interchange or trail junction.
