Useful when a supported downloaded area covers the whole drive. Walking or public-transport plans need a different offline fallback.
- User-selected downloaded areas
- Offline guidance within a saved area
- Offline walking, cycling and transit directions are unavailable
- Offline driving lacks live traffic and alternative routes
Download coverage is a boundary
Google’s support page says an offline map can guide you when the complete route lies within the downloaded area. Some countries or regions do not support downloads. That makes coverage a planning decision, not simply a switch marked offline. Check the destination and the approach roads, especially if you are travelling beyond a city centre or changing plans during a trip.
Do not carry online assumptions offline
Google documents important limits: offline transit, walking and cycling directions are unavailable, and offline driving does not include traffic information or alternative routes. Before leaving, our suggested preparation is to write down the accommodation address and keep a separate copy of any critical transit instructions. That short note remains useful even when the app cannot provide the particular type of route you need.
Maintain the downloaded area
Use the app’s Offline maps controls to inspect the saved area and its update status. Maps need updating before they expire. Download while you have a reliable connection and enough storage, then try a non-essential route with connectivity disabled before departure. This is preparation advice, not a promise of coverage, accuracy or safe navigation in every location. Follow local signs and conditions during the journey.
Go straight to the people who make it.
