The export source can differ from the clip currently on screen. Check it before rendering a long edit.

01

Keep the editable save

Shotcut’s FAQ identifies an MLT XML file as a saved editing project and Export as the route to a separate movie. Our suggested naming routine distinguishes those files by purpose, not just by extension. Keep the project and its source media until you have checked the final result and know what you will need for later revisions.

02

Inspect the export source

The FAQ says Export can use the playlist, timeline or a clip or live source depending on the project, and that its From control lets you choose. Read that control before starting. If you expected a complete edited sequence, confirm that the selected source is the sequence rather than a single clip you were reviewing.

03

Try a manageable delivery first

Our recommendation is to export a short, representative test before a long movie. Include a transition and any text or audio that matters to the finished work. A fast export with the wrong source is not useful. Record the preset you selected so you can repeat a result you actually inspected.

04

Review the movie as a viewer

Open the exported file in a separate player and check the beginning, ending, audio and expected sequence. If there is a problem, return to the project and change one relevant setting before trying again. The current FAQ has troubleshooting guidance; this article does not certify every preset, codec or computer combination.
