Spend a short test on the scene most likely to reveal a problem before queuing the full video.

01

Begin with the destination

Our suggested first step is to name the device or application that must play the result. Choose an appropriate preset, retain the original source and give the output a different filename. A smaller file is useful only if it still plays correctly and preserves the details your viewer needs.

02

Use the documented Preview workflow

HandBrake’s Preview feature encodes a small portion of the source. Open Preview from the toolbar, select a starting position and duration, then start Live Preview. The official documentation describes playback controls for reviewing the result and making another preview after changing settings.

03

Pick a demanding sample

Choose a scene with movement, small text or detailed backgrounds instead of only a quiet title card. Our suggested comparison is to view the source and sample at the intended viewing size. Check dialogue and any required subtitles too. This helps define a concrete quality problem before adjusting settings.

04

Change quality in small steps

HandBrake documents quality controls and cautions that different encoders use different scales. Begin with the preset and make small changes, then preview again. Do not copy a number from another encoder and assume it means the same quality. Higher quality can increase output size; a sample is not a guarantee of full-file size or completion time. We have not benchmarked encoding on your computer.
