Worth considering if your phone is a home for downloaded videos and your own music collection.
- Local audio and video library
- Subtitle and network-stream support
- Playback performance depends on the file and device
- Not a subscription film catalogue
What it does
VideoLAN documents an Android media player with an audio and video library, network streaming, and support for embedded and external subtitles. An equalizer and playback controls extend its use beyond simply opening a video.
Why it is worth a look
Our assessment is that VLC makes sense for people who already have media files. Start with a familiar clip and a subtitle file: that is a more useful personal trial than relying on a broad claim that every format will work perfectly.
Before you install
Decoding performance depends on hardware and media characteristics. We have not benchmarked this release. Use the developer’s download page for the current build and compatibility details.
A useful playback check
Try a local clip you know well before connecting a remote library. Check three separate things: whether the picture plays, whether the intended audio track is selected, and whether subtitles appear in a readable size. A silent video can be a track-selection problem rather than a reason to replace the whole app. If only a network stream fails, compare it with the local clip before blaming decoding.
For subtitles, keep the video and its accompanying subtitle file together while you evaluate them. Note whether the subtitles are missing entirely or merely out of time. These are different problems to describe when consulting VideoLAN’s help. Do not delete or convert your only copy as the first troubleshooting step.
Where it belongs in your media setup
VLC is a player for media you can access; it does not supply the films or music in a subscription catalogue. Our decision rule is to consider it for a collection of local files, recordings or a supported stream. If your main need is choosing something from a particular subscription service, evaluate that service’s own supported app instead. Keep the source files until your normal playback routine works.
