Our research assessment: Joplin is worth considering when the notebook itself matters more than elaborate presentation, especially when notes include files and reference material.

REASONS TO LOOK
  • Desktop and mobile applications
  • Attachments and web clipping
KEEP IN MIND
  • Sync needs deliberate setup
  • Rich Text and Markdown workflows differ
01

What you can collect

Joplin’s documentation describes notes containing images, audio, video and PDFs. Desktop and mobile apps are available, with a browser clipper for Chrome and Firefox. The developer lists several sync destinations, including its own Joplin Cloud. It also provides encryption documentation; read that setup guidance before assuming a particular notebook or sync configuration is protected.

02

Try an ordinary week of notes

A useful trial is a project notebook containing a meeting note, a photographed receipt and a reference page. Keep the structure small enough to search comfortably. Check whether the same material is usable on both your phone and computer, rather than judging only the desktop editor. Write down what has to work offline and how often attachments need to move between devices. Those requirements often decide whether a notebook fits better than its visual theme does.

03

Plan the exit as well as the start

Our recommendation is to investigate export and backup before transferring your only copy of an important notebook. Synchronization keeps devices aligned, while a separate backup offers a recovery point. Optional plugins and different editors provide flexibility, but they also create choices to maintain. Joplin’s appeal is strongest when you want a practical home for mixed research material and can spend a little time learning where your notes, attachments and synchronization settings belong.
