Non-destructive photo development
darktable documents a non-destructive workflow: adjustments are stored separately rather than rewriting the original image. It can import RAW and other image formats, with support depending on the camera and format. The collection tools include tags, ratings and filtering. This makes it a candidate for developing a set of photographs, rather than only applying a quick effect to one picture.
Choose the output before the adjustment
The export system supports formats including JPEG, PNG and TIFF. Our suggested starting exercise is to decide where a photograph will be used, then export a copy for that destination. Keep the original separate from the delivered image. A web-sized JPEG, a high-quality print file and your editable workflow are different deliverables; naming them clearly makes later revisions easier.
Keep the editing work as well as the picture
darktable uses its database and XMP sidecars for metadata and processing settings. A folder of exported pictures alone should not be treated as a complete copy of your editing workflow. Before moving a collection between computers, consult the manual for the files and database involved. Try the move with a small copied collection before trusting it with your only originals.
Check your system and your camera
The official installation page provides Windows, macOS and Linux options. Check the current requirements, camera support and release notes rather than assuming every RAW file or computer works equally well. We have not measured rendering speed, compared colour accuracy or tested a camera collection. This research review identifies the documented workflow and decisions to check during your own trial.
