A focused choice for archive work. Its value is format support and control, rather than a promise that every folder will become dramatically smaller.
- Creates ZIP and 7z archives
- Extracts many additional archive formats
- Compressed files still need enough extraction space
- Archive contents require the same care as other downloaded files
What is current
The official site lists version 26.03, dated 3 September 2026. Its release history describes fixes and improved handling of Joliet ISO images and Compound archives. Choose the installer for your Windows architecture: x64, ARM64 and x86 are separate downloads. A current version number is useful to compare with your installation; it is not a guarantee about every archive you receive.
Choose a format for the recipient
7-Zip creates both ZIP and 7z files, while some other listed formats are extraction-only. For a folder you plan to send, first ask what the recipient can open. Our suggested trial is a copy of a small folder containing a document and a photo. Create an archive, extract it into a different empty folder and open both files before relying on that workflow.
Keep the original until you check
A smaller archive is convenient for transfer, but it is not by itself a backup strategy. Keep the source files until the extracted copy is verified. Do not judge compression by a folder of already compressed photos alone. We have not measured this release’s speed, compression ratios or behavior on particular Windows hardware.
