Understand the scope of App Tracking Transparency before interpreting Allow or Ask App Not to Track.

01

Read the request narrowly

Apple describes App Tracking Transparency as a choice about linking activity across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising or sharing with data brokers. It is not a general switch for every piece of information an app uses. Keep that scope in mind when you compare the tracking prompt with location access, an account profile or information you deliberately enter into a service.

02

Choose and revisit

When prompted, you can choose Allow or Ask App Not to Track. Apple says the app remains usable either way. To review choices later, use Settings, Privacy & Security, then Tracking. The option to allow apps to request tracking controls whether those requests can be presented. Account restrictions or device management can affect the available controls, so consult Apple’s support page if an option is unavailable.

03

Use a practical privacy check

Our suggested follow-up is to review one app’s permissions and privacy information alongside its tracking choice. Ask what you need the app to do and which access supports that task. Do not interpret the absence of a prompt as proof that no data is collected. For a service handling important personal information, also inspect its account settings and deletion options. These steps help organize a decision; they do not constitute a privacy audit of the app.
